Smol Text: How to Make Tiny, Cute Letters You Can Copy and Paste

What smol means, where the word came from, and the three tiny Unicode styles that make your words look as smol as they sound.

Last updated

Smol text is tiny Unicode lettering, such as ˢᵐᵒˡ, ꜱᴍᴏʟ, or ₛₘₒₗ, named after the internet slang word smol, which means small and cute. You make it by typing words into a small text generator, then copying the superscript, small caps, or subscript result and pasting it anywhere.

This guide covers both halves of the phrase: the slang word and the tiny letters. If you only want the letters, open the small text generator and type. If you want to know why everyone calls their cat a smol bean, keep reading.

What does smol mean?

Smol is internet slang for something small and cute. Wiktionary defines it as "tiny and cute" and labels it an eye dialect spelling of small, meaning a deliberate respelling that sounds almost the same. Its comparative forms are smoler and smolest.

The word is about affection more than size. Dictionary.com describes it as an affectionate way to call someone or something small, used most for puppies, kittens, and other animals. Linguist Gretchen McCulloch pointed out in Mental Floss that fans used it for One Direction members, who are 5'7" to 5'11". Smol works like calling someone baby: it signals that you find them adorable.

Where did the word smol come from?

Smol spread across social media in the spring and summer of 2015, although its exact origin is unknown. Dictionary.com traces an early use to a 2008 tweet about "smol children". Know Your Meme dates the breakout to 2015, when a BuzzFeed list titled "20 Baby Animals Who Are Too Smol" ran on May 8.

The phrase smol bean carried it further. It appeared on Twitter in March 2015, and fans of the band Twenty One Pilots used it for singer Tyler Joseph. On June 26, 2015, Joseph tweeted "I am a bean", which drew more than 22,000 retweets within two months. By August and September 2015, Know Your Meme counted more than 111,000 tweets using the word.

Smol then settled into DoggoLingo, the playful pet slang that also gave us doggo and pupper. Its opposites follow the same vowel swap: tol for tall and lorge for large. The word has lasted, too. Wiktionary quotes The Economist using "smol government" in a 2024 headline.

What is smol text?

Smol text means one of two things: writing that uses the word smol, or writing made of tiny characters. Most people searching for it want the second one. They want letters that look as small as the word sounds.

Tiny characters go by several names. Smol text, mini text, miniature text, tiny text, and small text all describe the same thing: Unicode characters drawn smaller than normal letters. They are not a font, so they keep their size when pasted into an app that gives you no font options. The tiny text guide explains the mechanics in more depth.

How do you make smol text?

You make smol text by converting normal letters in a generator and copying the result. It takes four steps and no install.

1. Open the tiny text generator.
2. Type or paste your words, for example smol bean.
3. Compare the superscript, small caps, and subscript results.
4. Click the one you like to copy it, then paste it into your bio, caption, message, or display name.

Each of the three styles gives a different kind of smol. The word smol itself is a lucky case: all four letters exist in all three styles, so it converts completely every time.

Superscript: the smallest smol

Superscript is the smallest of the three styles and the closest match to how smol sounds. It raises tiny letters above the line: ˢᵐᵒˡ ᵇᵉᵃⁿ. Every lowercase letter converts except q. Use the superscript generator for short phrases, since long lines of superscript get hard to read.

Small caps: the most reliable smol

Small caps is the most complete style, so it is the safest for full sentences. It uses miniature capital shapes that sit on the line: ꜱᴍᴏʟ ʙᴇᴀɴ. Only x has no small caps form. It reads as neat and quiet more than cute, which suits bios and headers. Try it in the small caps generator.

Subscript: smol below the line

Subscript drops tiny letters below the line, and it is the patchiest style. It has only 17 of the 26 lowercase letters. Smol converts fully (ₛₘₒₗ), but smol bean becomes ₛₘₒₗ bₑₐₙ, with a full-size b in the middle. Check your word in the subscript generator before relying on it.

Which smol words convert cleanly?

Most DoggoLingo words convert fully in superscript and small caps, but only some survive subscript. We ran ten common words through our own generator on October 6, 2026. The last column shows whether every letter converted in subscript, and names the letters that stayed full size when it did not.

How do you style smol text for bios and captions?

Smol text looks best when the whole line stays small and soft. Three habits from smol-speak carry over to styling, and each takes a few seconds.

Keep it lowercase. Smol-speak is almost always written without capitals, and superscript capitals are a different size from the lowercase letters, so mixed case looks uneven. Keep it short. One phrase such as ᵛᵉʳʸ ˢᵐᵒˡ or ʰᵉⁿˡᵒ ᶠʳᵉⁿ reads at a glance, while a full paragraph of superscript does not.

Pair it with one softer style for contrast. Bubble letters (ⓢⓜⓞⓛ) from the bubble text generator suit a name. Letter spacing (s m o l) gives a gentle, airy look with normal characters. Use plain text for the rest of the line so the smol part stands out. For script styles in the same mood, see cute and aesthetic cursive fonts.

Where does smol text work?

Smol text works anywhere that accepts standard Unicode text. That covers Instagram and TikTok bios and captions, Discord display names and messages, X posts, Facebook, WhatsApp, and most chat apps. It pastes as ordinary text, so you can select and edit it afterwards.

It does not work in usernames and handles, which accept only plain letters, numbers, and a few symbols. On some older phones, a character can show as an empty box. Preview the text in the app before you save it. For app-specific steps, see the Discord tiny text guide and the Instagram bio guide.

When should you not use smol text?

Skip smol text wherever people need to read, search for, or hear your words. Screen readers may read tiny Unicode letters one at a time by their technical names, or skip them. Search and hashtags treat ˢᵐᵒˡ as different characters from smol, so styled words will not match a search.

It also has a tone. Smol is playful and affectionate, which fits a pet account or a fan bio and sits oddly in a job title or a customer notice. Keep important details such as your name, contact info, and links in plain text, and use smol text as decoration around them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01What does smol mean in text?+

Smol means small and cute. It is a deliberate respelling of small, used affectionately for pets, babies, and people someone finds adorable. It often has nothing to do with actual size.

02Is smol a real word?+

Smol is established internet slang with entries in Wiktionary and Dictionary.com's slang dictionary. Wiktionary labels it internet slang and gives the forms smoler and smolest. It is informal, so it does not belong in formal writing.

03What is a smol bean?+

A smol bean is someone small, sweet, and precious. The phrase appeared on Twitter in March 2015 and spread through fandoms, most famously for Twenty One Pilots singer Tyler Joseph. Fans use it for favorite people regardless of their real height.

04How do I type smol text on my phone?+

Open a small text generator in your phone's browser, type your words, and tap the result to copy it. Then paste it into your app. Phone keyboards do not have superscript or small caps letters, so a generator is the practical way.

05What is the smallest smol text style?+

Superscript is the smallest of the three tiny styles. Subscript is about the same size but is missing nine letters, and small caps is slightly larger but nearly complete. For one or two words, superscript looks the most smol.

06Why do some letters stay big in my smol text?+

Letters stay big when Unicode has no tiny version of them. Subscript has no b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, or z, superscript has no q, and small caps has no x. The generator leaves those letters plain instead of inserting a wrong symbol.

07Is smol text the same as tiny text or mini text?+

Yes, smol text, tiny text, mini text, and miniature text all describe the same small Unicode characters. Smol text is the slang name for them. The styles involved are superscript, small caps, and subscript.

08Can I use smol text in my Instagram bio?+

Yes, smol text pastes into Instagram bios, names, captions, and comments. It does not work in the username, which accepts only plain letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.

09What is the opposite of smol?+

The opposites of smol are tol, meaning tall, and lorge, meaning large. Both follow the same playful vowel swap. Chonky is used for a pet that is round instead of small.

10Does smol text count as more characters?+

No, each superscript, small caps, or subscript letter counts as one character, the same as a normal letter. A bio written in smol text uses the same share of the character limit as plain text.

11Is smol text bad for accessibility?+

It can be. Screen readers may read tiny Unicode letters by their technical names or skip them. Keep smol text to short decorative phrases and write anything important in plain letters.
